Permit Information

In the United States, all marine mammals are protected under the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act, and some species may also be protected under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Approaching protected animals, capturing animals and conducting research on animals requires specific permits issued by the responsible federal agency. In addition, all research projects on vertebrates require permits by Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees, as required under the U.S. Animal Welfare Act.

All work presented here was/is conducted in accordance with all applicable animal welfare guidelines. All marine mammal research presented on this website was conducted under permits #1034-1685, 881-1668, 881-1890, 358-1564, 14335, 14336, 14324 and MA-043219 issued by the National Marine Fisheries Service, and all required institutional permits from participating institutions. All shark work we will be reporting on here starting in 2021 was/is being conducted under Aquatic Resources Permits issued by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, numbers CF-18-041, CF-19-085, CF-20-081, CF-21-070, as well as all required institutional permits from participating institutions.
